A customer had requested a hanging lamp inspired by The Konya Lamp, a Seljuk mosque lamp made in the year 1280 by Ali ibn Muhammad al Nisibini. This lamp has become famous in Islamic art history circles for its intricate pierced detailing. To realize this project I had the pleasure of collaborating with a couple of Istanbul’s most talented metalsmiths, who use methods nearly identical to those that would have been used to create the original. Imagine the impact such a lamp must have had for worshippers living in an age before electricity, where the light coming from the oil lamp inside would project the intricately pierced patterns and calligraphy onto the surrounding walls. Get in touch to let me know your thoughts or discuss a similar project.
